About me
The person who quotes it is the person who builds it.
A bit about how I got here, and what you can expect when I'm working on your home.
I'm Nigel, and NK Wood is just me.
My career began in New Zealand, where I trained and spent my first ten years in the building industry — it's where the fern in the logo comes from. I then moved to London, where I established and ran my own building company for around 20 years, working on everything from new-build houses and commercial developments to high-end residential refurbishments and smaller renovation projects.
I eventually moved my business to Devon, choosing a more relaxed pace of life and a better lifestyle for my family, while continuing to do what I've always enjoyed — building.
Today, I deliberately keep my company small. I believe this allows me to offer something that can be difficult to find with larger building companies: a genuinely personal service.
Experience you can build on
The experience of a lifetime in the trade, the service of a small local company
With over 35 years in the building trade and 30 years running my own business, I bring a wealth of experience to every project I undertake.
My experience means I'm comfortable taking responsibility for substantial projects, from the initial planning and coordination through to completion. I can manage the different trades, keep the project moving and make sure the quality and detail are maintained throughout. At the same time, I'm just as happy taking on smaller projects, whether that's a kitchen, bathroom, renovation, alteration or individual building works.
Whatever the size of the project, my approach remains the same: clear communication, quality workmanship, attention to detail and taking genuine pride in the finished result.
After 35 years in the trade, I understand that building work is about much more than simply putting something together. It's about listening to what the client wants, providing honest advice, solving problems when they arise and delivering a finished project that you can be proud of.
How I work with you
What to expect from first call to final clean-up
A proper look, not a guess
I come and see the job before I quote it. Prices given over the phone without eyes on the work help nobody.
A quote you can read
Written up in plain terms, broken down by task, so you know what you're paying for and why.
Left as I found it — tidier
Dust sheets down, site swept at the end of each day, and your home treated with the same respect I'd want in mine.
